New BXTA white paper reinforces the role of focal LDR brachytherapy in localised prostate cancer

Theragenics Brachytherapy extends our congratulations to our valued distribution partner BXTA on the publication of an important new white paper: “Focal therapy for localised prostate cancer: a systematic review of efficacy and functional outcomes from partial gland ablations with Low Dose Rate Brachytherapy, High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, Irreversible Electroporation, and Cryotherapy,” authored by Santiago Uribe-Lewis, MD, PhD and Land Ketsawang, MSc.

The review appraised 97 peer-reviewed studies published between May 2015 and March 2026, covering more than 10,000 patients across four focal therapy modalities. Key findings supporting Focal LDR Brachytherapy (FB) include:

  • Strongest cancer control: Median in-field clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) recurrence of 3% after FB, compared with 11% (HIFU), 6% (IRE), and 10% (Cryotherapy).
  • Best preservation of quality of life: Sexual function decline reported in only 12% of FB studies, versus 33% (HIFU), 36% (IRE), and 55% (Cryotherapy). Urinary function was largely preserved or improved, and bowel function was always preserved.
  • Favourable safety profile: Median Grade 3 adverse events of 0% for FB, with the longest median follow-up among focal modalities at 36 months.

Real-world evidence from nearly a decade of clinical studies supports Focal LDR Brachytherapy as the most efficient focal modality for localised prostate cancer, with minimal impact on organ-at-risk function. The authors note that randomised comparisons remain needed to confirm long-term advantages relative to whole-gland treatment and active surveillance.

Our thanks to BXTA, our trusted partner across the UK, EU, Australia, and New Zealand, for their continued leadership in advancing prostate cancer care and the clinical benefits of LDR Prostate brachytherapy.
